May 26 Update
By Janet | May 26, 2008
This is an email Janet (Peter’s Mom) sent out. I spoke with Bud about 3:30 today and Peter is out of ICU and in a room and will start physical therapy. The hospital does not allow flowers because of unknown bacteria that might be present. As soon as Bud lets us know Pete’s room # I will send it on so that we can start getting some cards and magazines to him. Bud says they are still in a state of shock…one minute you are on the beach watching your son paddling in the ocean the next minute this. I assured him that all of us our praying and KNOWING that Peter will recover~ I will keep you posted
Blessings,
Christy Cummins
Email from Janet, Peter’s mom, that was sent out before he was moved out of ICU…
Friday afternoon our 19 year old son Peter was taking surfing lessons at Waikiki Beach on our family vacation. To make a fairly long story more concise he began to experience severe back pain and it became bad enough that we called an ambulance and took him to Queens Hospital in Honolulu. Peter is now in intensive care suffering from a non-traumatic Myelopathy. As I understand it, it is a condition caused by the spinal cord being deprived the sufficient blood supply while paddling a surfboard. The injury causes paralysis wih both legs and an individual has an unpredictable recovery. Presumably the recovery is dependant upon the body’s ability to heal itself as there is no available surgery to correct the condition.
Bud and I and our daughter Whitney have moved from our hotel to a apartment at the hospital, which is very close to Peter’s room. At this time, we do not know how long we will need to remain in Hawaii or when Peter can travel. Currently we are trying to find out more information on research hospitals and rehab clinics on the main land. If any one has any experience with this type of injury we would welcome assistance.
Peter is very alert with some back pain, but enjoys calls and text messages from all his friends. Please call or use his myspace or Facebook. If he does not answer right away, he’ll call you back. As with any hospital stay the days are long.
Please pray for healing and patience.
Also, if you would forward this message to everyone on your email list that may know Peter, as I don’t have my regular computer with me. I would hope this makes it to BA High School and the soccer, football, and hockey teams.
