May 30 Update

By Bud | May 30, 2008

Peter had a good day. He is currently sleeping with no fever. Last night we were battling a fever of 101 degrees for some reason. Today he slept in to about 11, which is usual for him. Then we started a busy afternoon. First was the cardiac chair. This is a very large wheel chair that basically has a small table like a bed that will recline flat if we need. He sits up right. Janet took him on a stroll first and then I took over and took him outside the hospital on the sidewalk to the front lawn of the hospital. We sat out there for about 30 minutes watching an army of ants working. He then educated me on all the different classes of ants. Queen, worker, nurse etc. Sometimes the most simple thing can be high quality time. He said I was definitely a better driver than Janet. He said she was weaving all over the place and even ran in to the wall once. As tall as she is, she still had trouble seeing over the top. I do have an advantage there. We then came back to the room and he spent about 45 minutes with the physical therapist. Main agenda was being able to sit upright on his own. He did great. We then had two ministers around. One originally from Alabama, and you could tell he was from Alabama, talked that southern drawl all the time, he brought us all milk shakes. The shakes really hit the spot. The other minister is a young man that came here earlier in the week. They are really helpful and I really appreciate what ministers do for the patients. We spent about one hour with them and the main topic was comparing Hawai’i high school football with Oklahoma high school football. Hawai’i can not hold a candle to us. They could not believe it when I told them about the jumbotron on the score board. The coaches show really took the cake. All this talk really entertained Peter. That is a big help. Then it was dinner, more P/T. Finally to bed at midnight. So far no fever tonight and it is 1 a.m. Tell your kids to keep text messaging Pete. Someone asked me today that their kid asked, “What do I say?” It does not have to be much. A simple hang in there Pete, can’t wait to get with you when you get home. Or “man it is hot here today, or it rained today. Anything, even local news would be a topic. I am telling you, the text messages and phone calls really are keeping his attitude good. I have to make sure he does not feel isolated. Especially here at the hospital. It gets very boring for him. Once we get to the rehab center, I think there will be many activities that will keep him and his mine occupied. Some of his teachers have contacted him. He really appreciated their interest. They have been super. Have a great week end and again, thanks for all your prayers. They are giving him the strength to overcome depression and he will overcome this occurrence.

God bless all of you
Bud
