July 8 Update
By Bud | July 8, 2008
Last couple of days has been pretty tough for Peter. When we were in the hospital in Hawai’i, the doctors felt that it was best to insert filters in him to prevent blood clots from entering his upper body. The doctors here felt the danger has passed and that leaving the filters in might cause complications in the future. So yesterday at 1 p.m. they were removed. He did fine but for some reason he has had a couple of bouts of low blood pressure and dizziness. When you do not feel good and then you are battling the paralysis and the intense physical therapy the depression starts taking over your mind. One of my biggest fears is him becoming depresseed and losing the edge. He seems to be feeling better tonight and is regaining the positive attitude. We had a little help with the attitude tonight when two of my friends and work associates came for a visit. Greg Valley from OKC and Vic Bruns from Pawnee came by and Greg Valley presented him an autographed football and picture that Steve Owens provided with Steve’s , Jason White and Billy Sim’s autograph. He is now back to his old self and ready to go tomorrow. Vic is such a devoted man in his faith to God and seeing him and discussing some of my feelings with him were a big help. His spiritual guidance was vey reassuring to me today. It was great to have both Greg and Vic here today. Thanks guys. We are expecting many visitors this week. Many of my associates are in town for meetings. Old time friends, Connie and Mel Newdigger are going to be here Friday. Now these are all friends of mine but we are expecting some friends of Peter’s from BA that he is really excited about seeing. Ken Salazar is going to bring his son Carl and another friend Ryan Sanders this Saturday. Carl was a kicker on the football team with Peter and both Ryan and Carl were also team mates on the soccer team. This really cheered Peter up when he found out they would be here this week end.
On the medical side there are not any changes in Peter’s condition. As of today we have one more month here. We are scheduled to be dismissed on Aug. 8th. Yes we want to come home but we also realize that we need as much rehab here as possible. We do not know what the next step will be or where we will end up with continued therapy. We know that the next 22 months are a very crucial rehab period. Today I was informed that we have a way to get home on Aug 8. I will let you know as soon as I confirm the details.
On another note, we have been contacted by the Miami project, the top research center in the United States, to do a video to promote spinal cord research. They will be here on July 24th. Whitney and Janet will be here to participate in this project. One of the things that Peter has committed to is doing anything he can to help others in his situation. As I reported in an earlier email, the company where he had his surfing lesson has changed the way instruction is given. The instructor informed Peter of this change. Spinal cord injuries are devastating. The emotional and physical strain is unbelievable. It is our mission to do whatever it takes to make people more aware so that research can proceed to find a possible cure for the people that are imprisoned in this situation.
Again thanks for all the prayers and prayers for Chris Henderson are being answered. If you do not remember he is the young man from Broken Arrow that was injured in a motorcycle accident a week after Peter’s occurrence. He will be flying back to Tulsa tomorrow to start rehab and reports are that he is being healed. Thank God for his mercy and healing powers for Chris and thanks for the many answered prayers we have received.
He will walk again,
Bud
