Sept 18 Update

By Bud | September 18, 2008

This week there have been ups and downs but more ups than downs. Tuesday was a tough day for Peter. Day in and day out therapy is tough on the mental state even when you can walk and  have all your body functions. When you throw in what Peter is going through, therapy can become drudgery. But Peter bounced back as he has always done once he did a session with our dear friend Dr. Deborah Sandella from Denver. The mental side of this fight is as important as the physical side. Visualizing and imagery has been a key point in Peter’s recovery and Dr. Sandella has provided this therapy. When he is on the LoKOMat, the therapist stress for him to visualize his legs moving.  With the renewed spirit Wednesday we headed for OKC for our session on the LoKoMat. Peter did fantastic. Until Wednesday the technicians had the machine doing 85% of the work and Peter 15% to make him walk. Wednesday they changed the settings to were the machine was doing 65% of the work and did not tell Peter until after the session. They also felt his quads and glute muscles firing without the electrical stimulation. He also moved his left foot back and forth while lying on the table for the student therapist and they made sure he was not using his trunk or ab muscles. Today we were in therapy at St. Johns and Brad, the therapist, had a full hour of excellent exercises for him. Most of them were the same exercises Quest to Walk had Peter do in Kansas City. We then had an appointment with Dr. David Malone, a neurosurgeon here in Tulsa. After our visit with him Janet, Peter and I are very excited. This is the first doctor we have seen that is wanting to figure out exactly what caused this occurrence. Maybe this knowledge will prevent this from happening again. We know that there have been six other cases since the first of the year come out of Hawaii and only one of these is a case we had already counted. Sufers Myelopathy is not a rare occurrence.

We have been blessed with many answered prayers and God continues to direct us on a path toward recovery. On this road, we know it is our duty to figure out what causes sufers myelopathy, and put a stop to this devastating situation.

We have also been surrounded by angels from the very start. The ministers that came to visit, including Bob Green, while in Hawaii and Denver. The nurses we had at Queens hospital and Craig in Denver and the hundreds of you that have been there to lend a helping hand and keep us in your prayers. But our latest little angel is special. Last Saturday night, seven year old Brendon Wiseley, from our hockey family here in Tulsa, was in Oklahoma City doing what he does every Saturday night, racing Junior Sprint Cars. After his first race, Brendon went into the stands with an older driver, probably nine years old. After a long period of time, Brendon’s dad, Wade, was getting worried and upset, wondering where Brendon could be. Brendon was on the verge of missing his next race. Wade was going to blister his butt when he returned for not letting him know where he was and possibly missing his next race. Finally with only minutes before his next race, here comes Brendon with his racing helmet in his hands. Once Wade saw what Brendon had done, a good paddling was out of the question. Brendon had gone into the grandstands and told the race fans about his friend Peter. He held his helmet as people donated $47 for Peter. Now why is this angel so special? For you see, about the same time Peter had his occurrence last May, Brendon had an accident on a lawn mower and a foot was severely cut and had to be amputated. Brendon has been going through therapy and the trauma himself, since May, and is now wearing a prosthetic on his foot. He is still having severe pain and trying to adjust to the prosthetic foot. Brendon is already out there racing his sprint car, limping into the stands on a prosthetic foot, thinking of others, not himself and asking people to help his friend Peter. Brendon’s action was very uplifting to Peter. Now tell me this is not an angel sent by God. Please add Brendon and his family to your prayer list. You can also go to Brendon’s website, it is interesting. www.brendonwiseleyracing.com

There have been too many positives happening in our lives the past four months for more positives not to happen in the future. With young men like Brendon and Peter, the future is bright and as Brendon has already demonstrated that anything is possible……………………….

He will walk again
